    Norway was culturally impoverished by 600 years of foreign control ,but by the middle of the 19th century art was becoming a potent expression of national pride, culminating in the exuberant paintings of artists such as Harald Sohlberg & Nikolai Astrup. In this second part of our course we will look at the development of Norwegian Art in response to the cultural and political climate in the country and study the artists in the context of their time.. This course continues on from the art of Finland. Students are not required to have attended the first part of the course. All welcome.

From the Georgians; Gillray & Rowlandson, to Punch and Strand cartoonists, Tenniel, Sambourne, Leach and Dickie Doyle and from Thelwell to Scarfe these visual drolleries have lost none of their appeal.

    England`s very first illustrated humorous magazine ,from its inception designed to puncture pomposity & eventually coming to reflect many of the decent values which were fought for in two world wars. The combination of wood block engraving & steam printing enabled an unprecedented evolution of the periodical press. Punch was initially successful due to the popularity of the cartoons of John Leech ,whose combination of visual & verbal humour continued & developed the pattern established in the late 18th /Early 19th century by Gillray ,Rowlandson & Cruikshank. Continuing its popularity into the 20th century Punch eventually ceased publication in 2002 after 161 years !

    Briefly dealing with the influence of French outdoor painting (covered in more depth in "Spirit of the North" in the Spring), this course will engage with the social realism of Christian Krohg and the love of the homeland, expressed so differently by Harald Sohlberg and Nikolai Astrup.
